Welcome to Vancouver Island Paragliding! - Looking to try paragliding for the first time? Interested in getting a book, DVD, or flying gear? Want to read about our latest flying adventures? Or maybe you just want to see some great photos? No matter the reason you're here, we hope that your visit will prove to be helpful. Be forewarned, however...
"For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you long to return."
- Leonardo da Vinci
Jayson Biggins was 8 years old when he first 'launched' himself high from a treetop. Unfortunately, he was without a paraglider at the time and ended up breaking both 'wings'.
Since then, he has excelled at many sports (track and field, basketball, downhill skiing, rockclimbing, etc.). In the Spring of 1992, he got his first glimpse of paragliding along the ocean bluffs off Dallas Road in Victoria, British Columbia - and it was at that moment he KNEW paragliding would become a part of his life. Time went by but a few years later - on the other side of the world in Australia - he finally got airborne and the dream became reality!
No experience necessary! Tandem Paragliding requires very little in terms of physical ability. If you're able to jog 10 yards/meters, weigh between 80 and 230lbs and don't have severe ankle, knee, or back problems, you're all ready to go.
First, you need to make an appointment. Please contact us a few days before your desired date to ensure availability. Send us an email, or call (250) 514-8595. At that point we'll also set a time for you to call and confirm your lesson, and find out about the exact meeting location (we'll be using a different flying site depending on the day's predominate wind direction).
The day of the flight, you'll need to call in at the agreed-upon time for confirmation and to check weather, meeting time, and location. This is a very important call. Paragliding, even more than most other outdoor sports, is extremely dependent on the right weather. If your tandem flight is weathered out, you may reschedule at your convenience.
Once you meet with your instructor, you will be taught the basics of paraglider flight - launch, landing, and what you can or cannot do while in the air. You will also learn some of the specifics of the site you will be flying and the route you'll most likely be following. This will make it all the easier for you to enjoy the flight afterwards. There is a small amount of paperwork involved, and costs will be settled at that point. Payment by credit card must be arranged beforehand.
We guarantee to have you in the air on your first day! Designed to give you an overall feel for our sport, you will first have the opportunity to fly with one of our instructors on a mountain Tandem flight and then get the chance to try solo gliding at our Training Hill. We start slowly with low straight and level hops, then progress steadily to several higher exhilarating flights. You will go home smiling!
This course provides you with the opportunity to fully 'earn your wings'. Instruction is given with a low student to instructor ratio working on practical theory, ground-handling and soaring skills, through to completing 35 high flights and writing both the Beginner and Novice Pilot examinations. Upon successful completion, the student receives a national pilot rating under HPAC (The Hanggliding and Paragliding Association of Canada) and is qualified and confident to fly all Novice-rated sites in the country and world-wide. This is run as a progressive course and, unlike most other flight schools, is catered to individual learning styles without a strict time frame.
Certified Novice Course specifics are explained in greater detail in person after successful completion of the DayTaster Course.
Vancouver Island Paragliding supplies all flying gear (glider, harness, radio, etc.) up to and including a student's first 5 high flights. You are then required to purchase your own gear and we will discuss the specifics of this with you (new vs used, size, rating, etc.).
Intermediate Skills Development
For Novice or Intermediate rated pilots. This course is spread out over 2 days and focuses on refining launch/landing skills, thermalling strategies, as well as introducing more advanced maneouvres. Also intended for pilots wishing to have a refresher or to focus on a few particular things that they just haven't mastered to their liking.
